Exmouth and the Ocean Adventurers
On our first day in Exmouth we rode across to the Big Prawn and then spent some time in the Ningaloo Discovery Centre Aquarium. We drove through town and then to the lighthouse. It’s a very different feel from other Pilbara towns here - think it is because of the naval base presence!
The next day we went on a glass bottom boat tour. The boys were amazing jumping off the back of the boat and having a snorkel over all the coral of the Ningaloo reef. The ocean water was lovely and we saw lots of different types of fish and coral!
An afternoon by the pool (the ocean water was warmer and quieter than the pool!) and the boys got to play with some kids at the playground. School holidays have hit and it is such a contrast to what we have been used to so far!
After a slow morning the next day we took a drive out to Turquoise Bay-we have only read and heard good things about it. It is amazing and deserves all the hype! We’ve learnt that Ningaloo is a fringe reef (not a barrier reef like Great Barrier Reef in QLD) so this meant we could literally walk from the sand to the reef. We were amazed! It’s a drift snorkel spot so you hop in at one end of the beach and it takes you over the coral to hop out at the other end and walk back and do it again!
We all saw so many fish in the water and lots of big chunks of coral to swim over. The boys are still adjusting to snorkelling (me too!) so they left the snorkels and just went in with a mask, flippers and noodles!
Even though the day wasn’t too hot the beach water was as warm as a bath. Boys had fun getting pulled from one end of the beach to the other in the current and playing on the sandbar. While Jas and Elliott went for another snorkel and saw giant fish and giant clams Tyler and I sat on the beach playing with all the pebbles and getting knocked over by the lapping waves. A point out from a tourist and we got to see humpback whales on the horizon flipping their tails!
A bit of rain and a quiet day at the park, crafting and lots of bike laps was how we spent the final day in Exmouth.
